Macintyre/Barwon River Canoe Trip

Introduction

This is an description of my journeys on the Barwon River in northern NSW. This river is not paddled very often. Sometimes people start a journey down the Darling River at Brewarrina which is about 122 km upstream of the official start of the Darling i.e. the confluence of the Barwon and Culgoa Rivers. Long distance journeys on the Barwon upstream of Brewarrina are few and far between. According to Murray-Darling Journeys the last descent (up until 2016) of the Barwon from Mungindi on the Queensland border was in 1999 by Steven Gates and Tim Anderson and the last descent from Goondiwindi was Humphreys in 1998. Since then there have been two known journeys from Walgett. The first was by Geoff Kelty and Wayne Cole and in 2020 from Walgett to Bourke. Their journey is described in the Brewarrina News, Oct 2020. They completed the journey with a flow of about 400 Ml/day and they only had one instance where they had to do a complete portage due to snags. The second is by Alan Davison in 2021 as part of his journey down the Darling and Murray Rivers between Walgett and Goolwa.

A summarized account of my journey (Mungindi to Brewarrina) is available in the NPA Bulletin, Vol. 59, No. 3, Sep 2022, pages 23-25 and (Goondiwindi to Mungindi) NPA Bulletin, Vol. 59, No. 4, Dec 2022, pages 28-30
